چکیده

The diverging and converging field components of the source-free focus wave modes are studied within the framework of both the Whittaker and Weyl plane wave expansions. It is shown that, in the Weyl picture, the evanescent fields associated with the diverging and converging components of the focus wave mode solution cancel each other identically. The source-free focus wave modes are, hence, composed solely of backward and forward propagating components of the Whittaker type. It will also be shown that no evanescent fields are associated with the causal excitation of an aperture by an initial focus wave mode field. The diverging field, however, is composed solely of causal components that propagate away from the aperture. With a specific choice of parameters, the field generated by the aperture is a very good approximation to the source-free solution. Under the same conditions, the original focus wave mode solution is composed predominantly of causal forward propagating fields. 0 I995 American Znstitute of Physics.

Non -propagating Waves and Behavior of Curtainwall-pile Breakwaters

Abstract Usually, evanescent modes or non-propagating waves are produced when a propagating incident wave impinges on an interface between two media or materials such as curtainwall-pile breakwater (CPB) at a subcritical angle and decay with distance from interface. To achieve an effective prediction of hydrodynamic performance of CPB and overcome the problem of underestimation of energy loss, ...

A Thin Layer Imaging with the Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy

Total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM) is an optical technique that allows imaging of a thin layer of the sample with a thickness of about 100-200 nm. It is used in science of cell biology to study cellular processes, especially near the membranes of living cells. This method is based on the total internal reflection phenomenon, where the evanescent wave is generated in the l...

Do Evanescent Modes Violate Relativistic Causality?

Time dependent experiments with evanescent modes (photonic tunneling) can be performed with high precision and at a macroscopic scale with microwaves in the range of meters or in the infrared regime in the range of centimeters. The infrared technology is the present day digital signal processing and transmission. Superluminal (faster than light) signal transmission by evanescent modes was shown...

Transmission and Reflection Characteristics of a Concrete Block Wall Illuminated by a TM-polarized Obliquely incident wave

Typically, many of the modern buildings have concrete walls constructed from cinder block walls, that have periodic nature in their relative dielectric constant. This periodic nature excites higher-order Floquet harmonic modes at microwave frequencies, which leads to the propagation of scattered waves along with non-specular directions. Periodic structures exhibit different behaviors when illum...

Detection of Fuel Adulteration in Real Time Using Optical Fiber Sensor and Peripheral Interface Controller

Detection of fuel adulteration in real time is the most important need of the world as it generates the hazardous effects on the environment, living and nonliving things. Various automotive users and fuel providers may mix kerosene in petrol and diesel. Adulterated fuel increases air pollution, as well as reduces the performance of vehicle engines. Such a malpractice in fuel is prevailing becau...
